Terran Republic

The Terran Republic, or Terra, is an international superpower. One of the three remaining major powers of Human Space, Terra has the largest population, military, economy and the most territory of the big three, only truly rivaled by the Verdcaidian Calsilian Imperium.

However, Terra is full of corruption and there have been several civil wars. Born out of resistance to Karvoni and Checkos occupations of formerly Human worlds, the Terrans formed an alliance under Phillip Ten Boom. But soon the fragile democratic institutions were eroded as Terran power was based on being an emergency coalition.

The presidency of Charles Scott Boyer and the resulting Moon Wars ended with the president’s death and the independence of several new nations, most notably the United Gillian Provinces and the Morean Imperium.

Etymology:

Terra, or sometimes written as Tellus, was the name for the Roman personification of Mother Nature, or the natural world of Earth. She shared many similarities with the Greek mythological equivalent of Gaia.

When Deneb was settled, the habitable world of Terra Nova, or New Earth, was colonized giving a demonym to its inhabitants of Terran. The term was also used by poets, writers and scientists interchangeably for Earth or Old Terra. It was from the prominence of Terrans that popularized the use of Old-Earth especially by members of the three great powers.

With Ten Boom’s establishment of the alliance, the etymology of “Terran” in the name of the new alliance and eventual republic became a political hotspot. Many sought to use it in order to claim that the Terran Republic was a universal term, referring to the usage of all sons of old-Terra. But many sought instead to use the term to refer to citizens of Deneb.
